APD Software Engineer, Declan whiting, was crowned finalist as Young Engineer of the Year in the International Critical Communications Awards 2019, which were held during Critical Communications World 18 – 21 June.

The awards are regarded as the most sought after in the field of critical communications and Declan is vying for the Young Engineer prize with two rising stars each from industry leaders Motorola Solutions and Sepura.

At just 26, Declan is playing an integral part in transforming the critical communications market through directly engineering the very latest solutions for emergency services’ critical communications networks.

He is a key part of the team responsible for developing Cortex, APD’s revolutionary control room Integrated Communication Control System (ICCS) which enables the emergency services to integrate communications. Declan is also working on LTE, the Long-Term Evolution of the UK’s Emergency Services Network, building client-side services from scratch, which will perform on the new network once it’s ready to be rolled out.

Declan, who joined APD in 2017 after graduating with a first-class degree in Computer Science from the University of Hull, said he was proud to represent APD in the world’s most prestigious critical communications awards.

He said: “Being part of a team that is making great strides in providing critical communications software is fantastic.

“From day one, it was clear I was working with absolute specialists. From the marketing teams to the software testers, everyone is on top of their game and that creates an environment in which you flourish and learn quickly.”

Hull & East Yorkshire People in Business Awards

Declan has also been shortlisted in the Rising Star category at the Hull and East Yorkshire People in Business Awards, taking place Friday 12 July at a prestigious black-tie ceremony.

These awards recognise and reward individual and team talent in all industries across the Hull and East Yorkshire areas. Dec has been recognised as a finalist in further recognition of his work on revolutionary control room solutions.

The APD Development and Test Team has also been shortlisted.

In acknowledgement of outstanding contribution, the group has been selected for the Team Impact award by an impressive line-up of judges. This award celebrates a team of unique, determined individuals who consistently produce great work.

Judges were particularly impressed by the team’s achievements in delivering cutting-edge software solutions for the emergency services in the UK and around the world.

As industry specialists who produce world-class mission-critical software, the Development and Test team deliver positive impact every day.
